One more week to go before you have officially completed the first trimester – one third of your pregnancy is done! Miraculously, in this short space of time you’ve grown a fetus that has all of its bit and pieces in place, including the finer details such as unique fingerprints. The good news is that the risk of miscarriage reduces significantly from now onwards, so you can start getting really excited about the prospect of being a mom and dad in the not so distant future.
Your Baby
Your little cherub is the size of a peach, about 7.6cm long and weighing in at 23 grams. Your baby is working on developing those vocal cords that they fully intend to use on their first day of arrival. Your baby still has alien like tendencies with their head making up 1/3 of their body, but don’t worry – the rest of the body is slowly starting to catch up. The eyes and ears are clearly defined and their eyelids are fused to protect their developing eyes.
Your Body
Whilst the nasties may have subsided from the first trimester, something else you may have noticed is an increase in vaginal discharge. This milky discharge is due to increased estrogen as well as increased blood flow to the pelvic area. Looking on the bright side of things, this discharge is designed to ward off any infections and it protects the birth canal.
Sensible Tips
- With this renewed sense of energy, perhaps look at introducing exercise into your routine if you’re not already doing so.
- Take a snap shot of your growing bump – it’s a fun way to track your progress and a lovely keepsake for the photo album.
